CML: Repossession levels lower than expected

Fewer homes were repossessed over the course of last year than had initially been predicted, according to new figures from the Council of Mortgage Lenders (CML). A total of 27,100 homes were repossessed in 2007, which was ten per cent lower than the CML's pre-year estimate and made up just 0.23 per cent of all mortgages, while numbers of homes reclaimed in the first and second halves of the year were roughly equal. There was similar consistency throughout 2007 in the numbers of mortgages with over six months of arrears, with the proportion for the year as a whole remaining below 0.5 per cent, which is only one seventh of the level recorded in the early 1990s.
